DJ Three  – “No Labels Allowed” was a mixtape that came out in 1996 on Tape Kingz out of NYC. The tape was part of a series from DJ Three released that year on Tape Kingz. Most of the tapes feature very rare and obscure classic independent hip hop 12″ singles. A few of his tapes can be found online if you search hard enough. However, this tape was nowhere to be found on the entire web when we looked for it. We will also have other tapes from DJ Three for download in the near future so check back for more obscure underground hip hop tapes at Extra Lovely.

P.S. – If you have any tapes you think we would be interested in or want to trade files contact: extralovelyblog@gmail.com

Berry Weight sits atop the slippery slope of a genre being diluted more each day.  Luckily, the international duo (one musician from Canada, the other from Switzerland) have dealt out some high quality downtempo trip-hop in Music for Imaginary Movies.

The majority of the tracks on this eleven-strong album are head-bobbers, taking the listener through fully saturated atmospheres, superbly crafted to satisfy those looking for a well engineered combination of electronic effects and real-world samples.  Though generally rhythmic in nature, these guys mix in a good amount of melody, courtesy of the lovely Astrid Engberg on three of the tracks.  Distinguishing this album from the rest, however, is the masterful clarinet work performed by the Frenchman Kledsy Jy.

This album is one to relax to.  Made up of some instrumentals, some lyric driven tracks, Music for Imaginary Movies strikes a comfortable balance between rhythm and melody.  Here’s to downtempo crafted by those who know what they’re doing.

This is the fourth mixtape from Mix Master Mike that we’ve posted on Extra Lovely entitled “Rescue 916” originally released on cassette in 1996. The style in which Mix Master Mike delivers can be compared to the hip hop version of improvisational free jazz. His rapid fire blends transition into live scratch solos that keeps your mind and ear hearing and seeing something new almost every second. Check out our previous post from May 2011 which includes three other mixtapes from Mike for free download.

Here are three mixtapes from Mix Master Mike “The Serial Wax Killer” from 1996 – 1997. In the eyes of us here at Extra Lovely these are really something special. The tapes are a blend of rapid-fire transitions, followed by improv scratch sessions mixed with audio clips from movies that come together to form an amazing psychedelic collage of turntablism from the golden era of its genre.  Mix Master Mike DJs for the Beastie Boys and was an original member of The Invisibl Skratch Piklz.
