Lapalux is an Electronic/IDM/Hip Hop producer out of Essex, UK who has been pumping out loads of original material in the past several years including a handful of exclusive mixes for various blogsites, original works on soundcloud and two official EP releases. Lapalux’s approach to the production process is pretty much fearless, he’ll attempt to lay hip hop vocal reworks over a floating soundscape with no drums at all and other times chop up a vocal melody over more chaotic drum patterns but remaining in the lush floaty world that seems to be uniquely his own. Lapalux played a live set at the Boiler Room in April, here is the live mix from that show as well as his remix of Abel’s Skipping Puddles for download.

Swedish band Little Dragon is reportedly named after its petite Swedish-Japanese lead singer Yukimi Nagano’s temper, and all of her fire-breathing moods are on full display with their third record, Ritual Union, out in July. Think ’80s vintage Prince at his horniest, fronted by Björk, and you’ll get an idea of the band’s funked-up and odd sound. Sticking to their all-synths, no-guitar policy, the record is sure to be your sultry summer soundtrack. Or at least it’ll be the shit your girl plays to explain why she’s breaking up with you.

On April 17, ?uestlove teamed up with Parisian star Keren Ann to present “Philly-Paris Lockdown,” a one-night celebration of 1900s Paris that took place at this year’s Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts. Keren Ann is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, engineer and songwriter with six solo albums to her credit. Her recent 101 has already attracted acclaim for its subtle intricacies and strong storytelling.

For “Philly-Paris Lockdown,” ?uestlove and Keren Ann were joined by a slew of artists to present an event awash in jazz, classical and hip-hop styles. The collaboration reworks compositions from Satie, Ravel, Debussy and Stravinsky.

1865 is a producer and MC originally from Colorado but more recently is living in San Francisco. His debut album “Dark Matter” was released in 2007 he then released an EP titled “Sodium Girl” about a year later. Dark Matter also had a short run release on vinyl. 1865’s style has a very original sound that is like mid 90s boom bap fused with down-tempo electronic music. 1865’s rhyme style is reminiscent of Andre from Outkast mixed with Del the Funky Homosapien but is unique to his own style and content. 1865 also majored in astronomy in college, his album title and song topics often touch on the science as well. 1865’s choice of production hardware is an ASR-10 which give his drums and sampling a mechanical feel but is layered with spacey and lush melodies. In more recent years it’s been more difficult to find any press/media from the artist but fortunately he’s left us with these two very original projects. Here are three mixtapes from Mix Master Mike “The Serial Wax Killer” from 1996 – 1997. In the eyes of us here at Extra Lovely these are really something special. The tapes are a blend of rapid-fire transitions, followed by improv scratch sessions mixed with audio clips from movies that come together to form an amazing psychedelic collage of turntablism from the golden era of its genre.  Mix Master Mike DJs for the Beastie Boys and was an original member of The Invisibl Skratch Piklz.

Datahowler invites you aboard his spacecraft for an interstellar journey into sound. Focusing on themes of outer space and time, Datahowler’s debut solo album, Slowdrifter, is an adventure into 1950s science fiction aesthetics, updated with just the right dose of modern technology. The music explores a diverse range of sounds, paralleling the multidimensionality of space travel.

There is often a misinterpretation that producers cannot play their own instruments, however that is not the case here. Datahowler can certainly still flip a sample, but he did not want to lean on samples as a crutch. Instead he chose to play live instruments on Slowdrifter in order to properly communicate the music’s thematic elements. The idea that one could space travel and explore the unknown final frontier is a metaphor for how Datahowler chooses to explore sound and humanity.
