Via Cosmic Compositions

We feel there are huge similarity’s between the Avant-Garde/Free Jazz movement of the 50’s & 60’s & the beat movement of Today. As both movements attempted to break down, extend & alter the conventions of their original genres (Jazz & Hip Hop) & were never afraid to experiment & improvise to create something that wasn’t accepted commercially at the time.

This compilation is a dedication to American jazz pianist, organist, harpist and composer Alice Coltrane.

”She was central to the Indocentric/Spiritual jazz of the early ’70s and arguably the first instance of a female instrumentalist assuming a defining role in a jazz subgenre. She spent the majority of her life seeking spiritually in both music and her private life & shared her husband’s [Jazz Legend John Coltrane] instincts in taking great artistic risks to pursue a spiritual quest.” – Jazz Times

Three years after ‘standthis‘ (LR001), the elusive and visionary dak returns with a formidable double dose of electronic abstractions and psychedelic hip-hop. The visual accompaniments set the scene: ‘youstandit’ hovers above a chaotic jumble of wires and machinery, all post-idm paranoia and claustrophobic detroit futurism, while ‘leftrecord’ shows a lush green overgrowth, encompassing the gritty, unconventional and untamed rhythms and textures of the natural world. ‘youstandit / leftrecord’ finds dak walking the blurry line between these two starkly different, yet disconcertingly similar environments– untangling, hacking, and digging his way through many dense layers in pursuit of a beautiful and harmonious peace underneath. Ben Gray aka Garfunkle a Pennsylvania native now residing in Boston is a scientist. Whether it be music, photography or bio-engineering Garfunkle disects his subject in order to understand fully the origin of its function. Once he’s gained that understanding he can rebuild that subject by his own hand. Garfunkle began as an MC and producer in high school then started working more with playing keys, programming drums and looping samples while attending college at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He produced a number of works while in Baltimore and developed a sound of his own. Tinkering being one of them is available for free download via bandcamp. Garfunkle’s music is rooted in jazz and hip hop. Using vintage keys synths, chopped up drum breaks, mathematic chord progressions and disection of samples; the science is in the sound. Garfunkle recently earned a PhD in Bio-engineering from Cornell University in Ithica, New York and is working on renewable fuels in Boston. Look for more releases from Garfunkle in the near future at Extra Lovely.
