Berry Weight sits atop the slippery slope of a genre being diluted more each day. Luckily, the international duo (one musician from Canada, the other from Switzerland) have dealt out some high quality downtempo trip-hop in Music for Imaginary Movies.

The majority of the tracks on this eleven-strong album are head-bobbers, taking the listener through fully saturated atmospheres, superbly crafted to satisfy those looking for a well engineered combination of electronic effects and real-world samples. Though generally rhythmic in nature, these guys mix in a good amount of melody, courtesy of the lovely Astrid Engberg on three of the tracks. Distinguishing this album from the rest, however, is the masterful clarinet work performed by the Frenchman Kledsy Jy.
This album is one to relax to. Made up of some instrumentals, some lyric driven tracks, Music for Imaginary Movies strikes a comfortable balance between rhythm and melody. Here’s to downtempo crafted by those who know what they’re doing.

Mndsgn an electronic/hip hop producer from New Jersey has been residing in Los Angeles and other west coast locations for the past several months doing live shows and working on new material. Some of that new material being this latest 5 track EP release entitled Daypass. Mndsgn also recently collaborated with several other east coast producers on a project entitled Blasphemous Jazz: The Bitches Brew Sessions.

Stainless Steele’s “The Renaissance Asylum” EP is a project that combines hip hop, electronica and psychedelic music with original thought provoking lyrics. The arrangement of the songs is also very original with some tracks lasting almost 6 minutes with only one verse and the rest left for instrumentation. However there is no lacking of lyrics or content when it comes to Stainless Steele’s verses. All songs written and produced by Stainless Steele except for Adorable Torture which was produced by ESP and co-produced by Stainless Steele.

I love watching a band evolve. On its third studio album, Little Dragon does just that. The Swedish quartet, fronted by singer Yukimi Negano, first hooked me years ago with its gorgeous mix of soul, R&B, rock, funk, synth-pop and electronica. But when I heard “Nightlight,” the lead single off Ritual Union, immediately knew something different was on the horizon.
The new record brings out a sharper side of the band. The sounds are more aggressive, the vocals more dynamic, and the mood more consistent as one track flows into the next. However, the band hasn’t lost the dreamy pop sensibility that has always made its songs so addictive.
The dance floor is my first love as a music fan, and Ritual Union has plenty to offer in that department. Uptempo rhythms and electronic beats are everywhere on this album, making for an interesting contrast with Negano’s vocals, which sometimes dip into a quirky and even folky vibe. The tension resolves on the closing cut, “Seconds,” a gentle lullaby with a hint of Kraftwerk that marries the band’s disparate influences perfectly.
